As a not-so-tech-savvy gal myself, I know that navigating sites for the first time can be tricky, so here’s the gist... Home Looking for an intro to the blog? This is (obviously) a great place to start. The home page just has general information about the community and myself. Facts Ah, the numbers. Facts, while they cannot fully encapsulate a scoliosis journey, are great to have as a foundation for learning more about scoliosis. I try to incorporate these stats into infographics or other types of articles to keep the numbers from becoming too boring. Tips & Tricks My holy grail products. My everyday routines. My solutions to the problems that I’ve found. This tab includes all sorts of tips, from clothes to stretches to keeping the brace clean. My Story I love watching vlogs on YouTube and reality TV shows are going to be my downfall. So, if you are, like me, a bit nosy (or as I like to say, "intrigued"), this page is perfect for you. I delve into the depths of my journey from the diagnosis ten years ago up to today, being almost done wearing my brace. *Your Story My personal favorite. This page is exclusively for you. You can share your journey with scoliosis. I love reading about other strong people who also live with scoliosis...it helps to know that we are a community that all understand what each other are going through. Q & A Any questions for me? Personal, about my journey, my favorite book, about scoliosis in general? Here you are. I post any questions I get and my answer to them for anyone who may have the same question. Resources Need a good website for bracing? Or a good blog (besides mine of course ;)? I post my top sites that I’ve discovered through the years.
Contact If you want to share your story or ask question, just fill out this form. My email and this form are always open to anything and everything :) I put an asterisk next to the tab with the most recent article, so it is updated every time a new article is posted! Hope this little key helps you find whatever it is that you need! And as you are scrolling through my latest article, or taking a peek at an infographic, keep in mind, we’re bent, not broken! :)

A few years ago, I was in the doctor’s office getting fitted for a new brace, and my doctor had mentioned that some of his patients like to decorate their brace. I’ve always been a minimalist, and therefore, had never really thought about getting a different colored brace or decking it out with stickers and signatures from my friends, as most kids do with casts. He mentioned that he had a lot of patients who wrote “Bent not Broken” on the three straps on the back of their brace, and from then on, I wasn’t able to get that phrase out of my head: the perfect description of what scoliosis patients are. Thus, when I decided to begin working on this blog, I immediately knew what I would call it: Bent not Broken. Three words that encompass so much of what living with scoliosis is. Fun fact: When I was writing my first article for this blog, the song “Just Give Me a Reason” (by P!nk), came on, and I knew that I chose right when I heard the lyrics: “We’re not broken, just bent”. I mean, come on. Perfect movie scene. These words represent the importance of pushing through the years of annoyance and pain. Our spines our literally bent, and sometimes, our outlook will be, too. But, this doesn’t mean that we are broken, and whether you are braced, undergoing surgery, or just reading this blog for fun, we can all use this phrase and remember that we are bent, not broken! :)
Over the last few months, I think we've gotten to know each other pretty darn well. You guys are the best listeners...it's nice to have people to talk to about scoliosis that really get what's going on.
Bent not Broken is meant to address those everyday experiences, whether it be medical or social. This will be a place of empowerment where sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, grandparents, friends, patients, and anyone who wants to truly learn more about scoliosis can just sit down on Saturday mornings with a cup of coffee and have a little read. But I’m just one person with one story. My goal is to create a place where we can all share our stories - the ups and the downs. This is an environment where we can come to terms with our slice of life. Hello! I’m Kate, an 18 year old SoCal-raised student and swimmer with a love of skin care and Pinterest. Those two loves aside, I am a fan of all books - from sci-fi (i.e. Harry Potter...fun fact: I’m a Ravenclaw) to realistic fiction (I love John Green, Jennifer Niven, Nicola Yoon, Jandy Nelson, Celeste Ng - the list goes on and on) to The Magnolia Journal magazine (I can’t get enough of Chip and JoJo). I dabble in writing, and, of course, I try to fit in an episode of The Office or Friends once (or twice) in a while. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was six, and have worn a brace ever since. I post articles every Saturday with the hopes of increasing awareness about scoliosis and creating a community that can act as an outlet for those who need a place to learn and chat about their scoliosis story. If you have any questions - about me, or scoliosis in general - feel free to contact me or leave any comments, and I will try my best to get back to you asap. I think that wraps up just about everything you need to know. Enjoy...and remember, we’re bent, not broken! :)
